Someone you love is gone. Death, divorce, estrangement, miscarriage, pet loss, or a friendship has ended. Your heart is broken. Grief lives in your chest, your throat, your entire body. You feel numb or overwhelmed or both. People tell you time heals, to stay strong, and to keep busy. But grief does not follow timelines or productivity schedules, and it does not need a band aid. It needs to move through your body, not be talked away or pushed down.
Talk of ‘healing’ is not helpful, and there’ll be none of that. Grief is not an illness. It’s a very natural response to loss, and so instead of ‘getting over it’ – something which is never possible, you’ll instead learn to manage your grief, to walk alongside it, to love with it, and to acknowledge it. We name it, and give it a place at the table, where we sit beside it. Instead of trying to suppress or eliminate grief, we just become that much bigger, in all the ways, so that there’s a space inside of us for it to live. But still space for us to live a full life too.
Through guided wild swimming in waterfalls, river pools, and coastal waters, we will use cold water to facilitate both somatic and emotional release. Suppressed grief and accompanying emotions often then bubble to the surface, with gentle walks through Northumbrian landscapes providing the time and space for tears to fall, and processing to commence. Our outdoor therapy and indoor counselling sessions then build on the safe spaces we’ve created, allowing you to share what feels right. The time you spend in nature provides perspective and comfort.
As a professional outdoor and adventure therapist, and young widow, I understand that grief needs to be expressed actively through movement, in nature, and to be witnessed, rather than just talked about. This is not traditional grief counselling, but the start of a journey where you’ll learn to live alongside grief, and to manage it, using your body, wild waters, wilderness, and one-to-one support.
This retreat offers a sanctuary for grief. No extreme challenges, just immersive experiences meeting you where you are in your journey. Complete privacy, without needing to perform normalcy. Wild swimming becomes a grief ritual, with the cold water bringing you into the present moment, releasing suppressed emotions held deep inside your body and mind, leading to a gentle but powerful physiological and emotional reset. The water holds you in a way that’s sometimes easier to accept than being held by human hands.
Gentle walks provide the movement that your body requires whilst processing loss. The rugged coastlines, ancient forests, rolling hills and waterfalls offer beauty, perspective, and awe. Nature does not rush your grief or tell you to move on. Rivers flow, seasons change, life continues, holding space for death and loss as natural parts of the cycle.
Our outdoor therapy sessions create a safe container for your emotions. You can speak your loss or sit in silence. Cry, rage, share, or simply be witnessed in your pain. Creatively express using natural elements. This is not traditional talk therapy, but embodied processing.
You’ll leave feeling a sense of release, a renewed connection to life after loss, with a set of outdoor therapy tools at your disposal, and that knowledge that grief can move through you when given wild places, cold water, and compassionate presence.
